Guys! I get to write for the blog!
Hello, I’m Mr. Devin and I am excited to be the new Primary Blogger for St Matthews Martial Arts.
I have been a martial artist since 2005 and I am part of the instructor team at the dojo. We teach Shaolin Kempo Karate as well as various other methods of self-defense and exercise for kids and adults. Teaching martial arts has been a fulfilling experience. I’ve always believed it is important for people to know how to defend themselves. With all the dangers that are reported on the news, I used to feel discouraged because if I were attacked I would not know how to respond. On a personal note, my right leg was significantly weaker than my left due to various surgeries in my life. Practicing martial arts has boosted my confidence and even with my handicap, my leg strength, balance, and mobility have significantly improved. One of the things I love about teaching is that our students become more confident in their own abilities. Not just in their ability to defend themselves, but more assured of themselves in general. It has always been more than just physical self-defense.
The Three Rules: Self-control, self-discipline, and respect are vital to learning our style. We have events that teach students how to diffuse hostile situations without using their fists. Because a physical fight and an argument are actually similar things, just with more intensity and more risk. We teach our students about decision making when they are under duress. Whether that means someone throwing a punch or someone screaming in their face. Knowing when to fight is just as important as knowing how to.
I have worked at the dojo for a long time. Achieved my black belt, became an instructor, and my journey is ongoing. I was recently (recently-ish) awarded my third-degree black belt, became a full-time instructor here at the dojo, and now I’m going to be a contributor to the blog. I guess what I’m saying is that it’s pretty awesome to be me (as Master Alan might say).
Once again, it is an honor to write the dojo blog and I look forward to demonstrating my “Write-Chi” style. 😊
